The Mojave Nostalgia and Kane Wash Loop
Saturday: the Journey In
The Iconic Start: Meet at the Bagdad Cafe in Newberry Springs.
it’s a perfect photo op for the trucks against the historical roadside architecture.
The Fuel Up: Head to The Barn Route 66 for a heavy brunch.
It’s a great spot to talk shop and air down tires before hitting the dirt.
The Accent: Drive up Camp Rock Road
Spring Perk: If it’s April, this stretch is famous for desert primrose and lupine
Sightseeing: Stop at the Rodman Mountains Petroglyphs.
It’s an easy walk to see carvings that are thousands of years old.
Basecamp: Set up a dispersed “truck camp” in the high plateau area to enjoy star gazing (the dark skies here are world-class).
Sunday: The Technical Decent
Terrain: This is a sandy, windy wash that tests the CyberTruck’s “Off Road” mode and traction control.
The Desert Pinstripe Warning: As you, the brush (creosote and catclaw) can get tight. Owners with wraps will be fine, but those with bare stainless might want to bring a pruning shear or be prepared for some light “character marks” on the trim.
The Exit: Loop back toward I-40 or Hwy 247 for thge drive home.
Newberry Wilderness
Overview
The Newberry Mountains Wilderness encompasses approximately 26,102 acres managed by the BLM’s Barstow Field Office with dynamic landscapes that provide visitors a memorable experience onpublic land. Rugged and volcanic in origin, the Newberry Mountainsgently rise toward broad and flat tops with elevations ranging from2,200 feet in the north to 5,100 feet in the south. Deep, mazelike canyons slice through the mountains in all directions.
The old Azucar Mine lies just outside the western border, and evidence of past mining activity is scattered throughout the area. When the rains cooperate, the western side of the Wilderness erupts into spring wildflower displays. Catch a glimpse of desert bighorn sheep passing through, or a falcon or eagle hunting from the air.
